Mainstream Renewable Power is an independent global developer of renewable energy with almost 10,000 megawatts in development and nearly 700 megawatts delivered into construction and commercial operation. Mainstream was founded in 2008 by Dr Eddie O’Connor and Fintan Whelan following the sale of Airtricity, a global development and supply business established by Dr O’Connor, for €2 billion to utility giants Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and E.ON. Our core business is to develop, finance, construct and operate large scale, renewable energy projects in emerging markets. We deliver world class renewable project development under the Mainstream Global Development Standard, underpinned by our core values.
Who we are
Mainstream was founded in 2008 by Dr Eddie O’Connor, formerly CEO and founder of global development company, Airtricity which was sold to Scottish and Southern Energy and E.ON for €1.8 billion. We have offices on five continents and employ 160 colleagues in our markets.
We are an independent global developer with a proven track record in delivering large-scale wind and solar power plant to the world’s emerging economies.
Governments look at our unrivalled experience in high-growth energy markets like Chile and South Africa and know they are in safe hands. Our proven ability to put all the elements of development in place, from consent to construction to operation means they can rely on us to guarantee delivery. To safely and successfully unlock the sustainable energy sources that will transform their economies.
Local partners are reassured by our international experience, our resources and our commitment to local communities. They trust us to bring their projects from blueprint to reality.
Investors look at our industry foresight, our leadership and the world-class standards that underpin our bankability. We give them unparalleled access and early entry into emerging power markets, a reliable and consistent growth trajectory and the flexibility to choose a targeted or diversified investment strategy.
Mainstream currently has a presence in five continents across ten countries and a global team of approximately 160 employees.
A substantial part of the development process is focused on working with the communities where we develop projects and through various community initiatives, we add substantial value through educational projects.
Mainstream is committed to global partnerships and, we have partnered with Actis, a global pan-emerging market private equity firm to create generation platforms; Aela Energia and Lekela Power. Both companies have achieved significant success already in Chile and Africa respectively.
At the very core of the business are a set of shared values: Respect, Working Together, Safety, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Integrity and Sustainability.
We develop, finance and build large-scale wind and solar power plant. Then we sell the assets to organisations looking for guaranteed long-term revenues.
As we progress through the development process, the value of an asset increases as the risk decreases. Our strength lies in the systematic de-risking of the project and the flexibility we offer the ultimate owners of the asset. They can choose to come on board at any time, depending on their risk-reward appetite. That could be at the late-stage development, financial close, construction or operation.
Our assets are typically backed by long-term power purchase agreements. So our investors have the assurance that cash flowing from the operational power plant will satisfy their on-going commercial needs.
We also specialise in partnering with large corporations wanting to invest in renewable energy. IKEA has purchased two of our wind generation plants and they rely on our expertise to operate and maintain these assets.
Mainstream’s mission is to lead the global transition to renewable energy. While it’s no small ambition, our vision of a world without fossil fuels is already evolving and transforming the way we live. Our part to play in that transition is to deliver cost effective utility scale renewable energy to customers and governments through our set of cohesive company values. These values are the cornerstone of everything we do:
Integrity. Safety. Innovation. Sustainability. Teamwork. Entrepreneurial approach. Respect.
Our values provide a clear foundation for the Mainstream Global Development Standard, and every aspect of delivery from development through construction and operation. Our global policies on Health and Safety, Quality and Environment are deeply embedded across our business. Teamwork, Innovation and an Entrepreneurial Approach are key to effective problem solving. Respect and Integrity are at the very core of our development approach, and are the basis for the comprehensive global Community Charter for interaction with the communities neighbouring our projects throughout the lifetime of our projects.
Our values: mean doing the right thing
Our values have been at the heart of our operations from day one. They have helpd us to win the trust of partners on five continents. They are the bedrock of our relationships with all of our stakeholders from global multinationals to local landowners.
The breadth and depth of our in-house expertise makes us unique in the renewable energy industry. Our multi-disciplinary team has over 600 years of industry experience. Whatever the challenge, we are the people who will find the solution.
We are a pure-play renewable energy company with a proven track record. In challenging conditions, we have the reputation for finding solutions no other developer can.
We bring local developers on board for every project. They provide crucial insights and work hand-in-hand with our international team. This mix of world-class experience and on-the-ground knowledge allows us to act rapidly and decisively. Even in uncharted territory, we are on familiar ground.
We don’t outsource core development work, so nothing falls through the cracks. Our partners can count on certainty, safety and end-to-end quality on every project, from site identification to funding and from construction to commercial operation.
