History
The history of Husum has been shaped by the sea and by trade.
In 1362 a massive storm tide broke over the coast of North Frisia, and complete villages and islands disappeared under the waves forever. Once quite a way inland, Husum found itself on the coast literally overnight.
A harbour was soon built, with shipyards and a fishing industry, and when the great herds of animals were driven from Scandinavia to central Europe, they passed by Husum, and trade flourished. There are signs of this history throughout the town. Old merchants houses line the small mediaeval streets, in the home of the poet Theodor Storm you can see the original furnishings as they were in his time, and in the Schloss vor Husum you can see the eventful history of the alternating Danish and German government of the region. Guided tours of the town provide a number of amusing anecdotes, and in the evenings the tour is guided by the traditional Night-watchman.
