Nexterra’s core technology is a fixed-bed updraft gasification system. These systems range in output from 2 to 40 MWth (8 to 140 MMBtu/hr) and 2 – 15 MW electric. Nexterra’s systems are simple in design, are able to handle a wide-range of feedstocks and produce very low emissions.

Nexterra`s next-generation power generation systems can provide clean, reliable syngas suitable for firing in high-efficiency internal combustion engines designed for stationary power/CHP applications. This high-efficiency power/CHP solution is ideal for District Energy Plants and Independent Power Producers where power prices are particularly high and where efficiency is a critical consideration. The first 2 MWe demonstration of this system is scheduled to start-up at the University of British Columbia in the third quarter of 2012. Nexterra has already completed over 3,000 hours of operation of this system at a 239 kWe scale at its Product Development Centre.

For customers who need high pressure super heated steam for conventional steam turbine power generation or for any other high pressure steam requirements (such as District Energy Plants, Industrial Process Plants and Independent Power Producers), Nexterra can provide economical steam systems capable of over 650 psig of superheated steam. The desired balance between power and heat will dictate the selection of the appropriate steam turbine technology (back pressure, extracting, or condensing).

In certain circumstances, pre-existing solid fuel boilers, kilns, dryers and furnaces can be retrofitted to fire renewable syngas in place of fossil fuels. By re-using the existing asset, the overall costs of a renewable energy project can be significantly reduced.
