Climate change, natural disasters and scarce natural resources have created a new international agenda which makes climate change and energy planning among the most urgent challenges facing our society today. Radical changes are needed if our long term goals to phase out energy supply based on fossil fuels and to realize a society entirely based on renewable energy supply.

NIRAS has worked with heating and energy planning for municipalities, counties and collective heating companies in Denmark since late 1970’ies. NIRAS handles e.g. planning and delimitation for district heating and natural gas.

District heating is and has been among NIRAS’ key competences since the 1980s. Our consultancy services include all aspects of planning, design, and monitoring of district heating plants in Denmark and internationally. Lately, district cooling has also been an integrated part of our project portfolio.

When planning a new heating plant NIRAS can assist from start to finish: Environmental approval is a prerequisite but it may also be neccessary to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment-screening or -investigation, or a new district plan with EIA.

Electricity: In NIRAS we consider electricity as a central energy carrier of the future energy system where renewable energy technologies will be playing an increasing role. NIRAS offers consultancy services to the electricity sector in relation to environment and environmental impact assessment (EIA), improvement projects and analyses in relation to connection of wind power to the electricity network.
