About Us
NNFCC is a specialist bio-based economy consultancy based in York, UK.
We believe bio-based technologies are a key component of the low carbon economy, creating sustainable business opportunities for feedstock suppliers, technology and project developers, manufacturers and investors.
We take an integrated approach to bioenergy, biofuels and bio-based products, providing a holistic view of technology, policy and market development, enabling better decision making and strategy development.
History
Established by the UK Government in 2003 as the National Non-Food Crops Centre, NNFCC has grown to become a leading UK consultancy focused on understanding biorenewable markets and technologies.
Services
We offer global companies pioneering consultancy services and act as an advisor to UK Government, providing technical, market and policy expertise on the conversion of biomass and waste to bioenergy, biofuels and bio-based products.
Our services are tailored to give organisations a better understanding of both the opportunities, and how to overcome the challenges, presented by the biorenewables sector.
NNFCC and Government
Since 2003, NNFCC has functioned as the UK's National Centre for Biorenewable Energy, Fuels and Materials. We provide authorative information and advice to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Department for Transport (DfT) and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
Policy development and deployment
NNFCC undertakes projects to develop the evidence base on which Government policy is founded. We assist Government officials in interpreting scientific, technical and market information to enable effective policy and regulatory frameworks to be formed. We also point out opportunities and barriers to sector development. We do this through formal responses to consultation documents and, equally importantly, through ongoing contact.
Information and advice
We derive, maintain and publish data on the bioeconomy. We produce Newsletters, Factsheets and Reports, both in print and online. We also post news stories focusing on flagship projects and materials, and successful members of the bioeconomy.
Centre Activity
We promote and support the uptake, commercialisation and use of biorenewables by;
- Identifying the requirements of manufacturers for improving the sustainability of their raw materials and processes.
- Encouraging UK companies to consider the use and production of biorenewable materials, using data and evidence.
- Disseminating information to industry on techniques, expertise and technologies.
- Helping to align R&D and demonstration projects with industry requirements.
- Advising funding bodies on research priorities.
- Sourcing funds for R&D and demonstration activities including the facilitation of consortia.
DECC provides grant funding for NNFCC activities supporting the Government's climate and energy objectives. NNFCC enjoy an effective and productive relationship as one of DECC's Delivery Partners.

NNFCC is a strategic consultancy with in-depth knowledge of the bioeconomy. We offer clients a wealth of experience in the bioenergy and biofuels markets and the growing biobased products sector. The team has international experience to guide businesses through policy hurdles and assist in the development of technology and international markets.
The bioeconomy embraces the economic, social and environmental activity and impacts associated with the use and conversion of biomass into energy and products, and the use of biotechnology as a research, process and environmental technology.
The bioeconomy has the potential to supply a large array of biobased products, fitting all forms of circular thinking from reuse to closed and open loop recycling. It can be viewed as an enabler for an optimised circular economy beyond the current largely linear fossil based economy.
At NNFCC we firmly believe in a future where biobased technologies are a key component of the low carbon circular economy.
Our mission? To provide sector leading strategic business consultancy; analysing, explaining and de-risking the bioeconomy for our clients.
Established by the UK Government in 2003 as the National Non-Food Crops Centre, NNFCC has grown to become a leading commercial bioeconomy consultancy serving an international client base across bioenergy and bio-based products.
Our initial focus on the development of the rural economy, through the development of industrial crop applications, has widened over the years to embrace climate change mitigation through biofuel and bioenergy deployment. We cover land and marine based bio-based feedstock from agriculture and forestry through to municipal and industrial wastes.
We are driven by our belief that the bioeconomy will create sustainable business opportunities and deliver wide ranging environmental and societal benefits.
Our objective is simple - to provide clients with a strategic view of feedstock, technology, policy and market development across the bioeconomy, enabling them to make informed business decisions and develop sustainable business strategies.
We have successfully delivered projects to a wide range of clients including agricultural businesses, biotechnology developers, power companies, chemical producers and product manufacturers, brand owners and retailers, Universities and Research Funding Agencies and both regional and national Governments.
