India with 16% of the world population only consumes about 3.4% of the energy produced in the world. The per capita consumption of electricity in India (about 400 kW per person per annum) is among one of the lowest in the world. Over one third of India’s population has no access to grid electricity today. In recent years, India’s energy consumption has been increasing at a rapid rate due to population growth and economic development. Poor quality of power supply and frequent power cuts and shortages impose a heavy burden on India’s fast-growing trade and industry. The supply demand gap of electricity where it does exist has averaged 8-10% over the last ten years.
