WastAway, LLC
For years, we’ve dealt with municipal solid waste – garbage – by carting it away to a landfill. But landfills, it has been proven, are not a satisfactory solution. They fill up. They require lots of space. They leach contaminants into the water or into the soil. They release dangerous methane into the atmosphere which is 21 times worse than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. And what’s left just sits there, some of it for centuries. WastAway is a technology company that looks at municipal solid waste a little differently. We’ve created solutions that take that waste and convert it into a safe, inert, sterile form that can actually be used as a supplemental fuel in the production of electricity, or be used as feed stock in the production of biofuels, or even be used as potting soil. WastAway takes something the world doesn’t want – municipal solid waste – and converts it into something the world can use.

About Us
WastAway’s patented process has been used successfully for over ten years to help communities and municipalities solve their solid municipal waste needs. At the heart of the system is the WastAway equipment that processes your waste, sterilizes it, removes any remaining recyclable materials, and converts it into an end product that has multiple uses. The system works, and has been in commercial use for more than a decade.
Every community has a unique set of needs, and WastAway works with the community to develop the appropriate solutions. If you already have a recycling program, WastAway will improve both participation rates and the amount of material recovered. If your community does not have a recycling program, the WastAway system will create one. Either way, the system will process your municipal solid waste and keep it from being taken to a landfill somewhere, where it sits. Our goal is to help you achieve Zero Landfill Growth.

What We’re All About
At WastAway®, we take something the world doesn’t want and convert it into something the world can use.
As a company, WastAway has deep roots in manufacturing the technology and machinery that makes things happen. As a mission, WastAway is focused on helping convert an endless stream of municipal solid waste – household garbage – into something that the world can use for good. In the process, WastAway helps keep that waste out of landfills or incinerators, increases recycling, decreases greenhouse gases and reduces the environmental impact of that thing no want wants – household garbage.
In less than half an hour, the WastAway system converts municipal solid waste into Fluff®, an inert, odorless, and pathogen-free product that can be used in a variety of ways. Fluff can even be pelletized for use as a coal substitute for power plants which significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In about twenty minutes, the hamburger wrappers and milk cartons you threw away this morning can be converted into pellets that can be used to create the electricity you use when you plug in your computer or turn on your lights.
It sounds like magic, but it’s not. The WastAway system uses proprietary technology, sophisticated controls and proven machinery that extracts ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, ceramics, dirt and sand from household garbage, and then processes the remaining garbage to create Fluff. Pelletized Fluff, because it is stable and pathogen-free, can be easily shipped and stored for use as a coal substitute or even converted directly into bio-fuels.
For communities or businesses with recycling programs, the WastAway system increases the recycling participation rates and efficiency. For those without such programs, the WastAway system can implement an environmentally responsible recycling program. For anyone concerned with an endless flow of municipal solid waste – household garbage – the WastAway system offers a responsible, sustainable way to convert something no one wants into something everyone can use.
It’s proven technology, in use for more than a decade and backed up by a company that is more than half a century old.
Zero Landfill
Sustainability. Recycling. Zero Landfill Growth.
How do we deal with municipal solid waste? More importantly, how do we do it in a sustainable way to achieve zero landfill growth? The WastAway processing system offers technology that presents all of these options in a flexible format that adapts to your community or business’s unique needs.
Does your community or business have a recycling program? WastAway’s patented process can improve participation rates and dramatically increase the volume of material recycled. Are you interested in beginning a recycling program? WastAway offers a solution that guarantees 100% participation in a fully-integrated, single-stream waste processing system. The WastAway processing equipment and technology is adaptable to your unique needs – from curbside collections to corporate office and cafeteria waste – to provide a fully automated system that converts waste into a usable end product in less than 20 minutes.
That’s the magic. The patented technology is pure science, proven in applications that have been solving waste problems for over a decade. The magic is the way the WastAway system converts something no one wants – municipal solid waste – into a safe, usable product, which we call “Fluff.” The WastAway machinery removes ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, ceramics, dirt and sand from the waste stream, and then converts the remainder into a predictable, homogeneous, pathogen-free, odor-free, carbon-rich material – Fluff – which can then be used in a variety of ways.
In its pure form, Fluff can be used either as topsoil or a soil additive; or converted into WastAway pellets. Fluff becomes a BTU-rich fuel that powers the boilers and kilns of power companies, cement companies, pulp mills and other solid fuel users while reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% over traditional fuel sources.
Even better, WastAway is financially viable. The conversion of something no one wants – municipal solid waste – into something sustainable and useful includes revenue sources such as tipping fees, metals recycling, carbon credits, renewable energy credits and the sale of WastAway pellets as a sustainable alternate fuel.
The WastAway technology is adaptable to your unique needs. Are you looking for a solution to an overflowing landfill or a never-ending stream of municipal solid waste? Clean Solid Fuels
The war on coal and other greenhouse-gas producing fuels has intensified over the past decade. Emissions thresholds and prohibitions against construction of new coal-fired power plants have expedited the search for alternative energy sources that are renewable and sustainable.
WastAway believes the solution is at hand, by taking something the world does not want – municipal solid waste, which we have in abundance – and converting it into something that can be used – WastAway pellets, the clean solid fuel of the future.
Using the patented and proven WastAway technology, municipal solid waste can be converted into WastAway pellets in about twenty minutes. These pellets are a BTU-equivalent coal substitute that can be co-fired with other solid fuels, reducing cost and greenhouse gases. Best of all, WastAway pellets are a process-engineered fuel, which are higher quality than more common refuse-derived fuels, and even exceed Europe’s detailed CEN/TC 343 standards for solid recovered fuels.*
Power companies, cement and paper manufactures and others are turning to WastAway pellets as their fuel of choice in part because:
- WastAway pellets are competitively priced based on their per BTU (unit) value
- WastAway pellets handle like coal and can be cost-effectively shipped and stored for extended periods of time (unlike refuse-derived fuels which deteriorate over time)
- WastAway pellets reduce ash, eliminate pathogens, and contain no germs or odors (unlike refuse-derived and solid recovered fuels)
- WastAway pellets reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 70% over coal or pet coke
- WastAway pellets can be co-fired with other solid fuels with no negative effects on existing boilers or kilns
- WastAway pellets require minimal capital investment to incorporate into current production processes
- WastAway pellets are eligible for carbon credits and/or renewable energy credits in many areas
Biofuel Feedstock
For years biofuels research has focused on effectively converting biomass into usable liquid and gaseous fuels. Switchgrass, algae, wood, corn, food waste, textile waste and sewage sludge are just a few of the biomass materials that have been tested and/or processed commercially into fuel.
But missing from this list is the one carbon-rich, biomass source produced daily in almost every home around the world – household garbage, or municipal solid waste.
Unfortunately, most municipal solid waste is buried in landfills or burned in grimy incinerators. The reason is that this waste is a conglomeration of many different materials whose use in biofuel manufacturing produces inconsistent and unpredictable results. Biofuel production – whether that is liquid fuel manufacturing, gasification or alternate power producers – work best with a homogeneous feedstock.
Enter WastAway®’s proven technology. In less than 20 minutes, the WastAway system transforms non-homogeneous municipal solid waste into a homogenous, predictable, pathogen and odor-free carbon-rich renewable feedstock called Fluff®. Fluff can be used in its raw form or pelletized, depending upon your unique requirements – but both forms have been safely and effectively tested in dozens of proprietary processes.
Gasification, pyrolysis, catalytic depolymerization, Fischer-Tropsch and a host of other technologies have all proven to work better using Fluff as a feedstock in place of traditional ground municipal solid waste. Click here to contact WastAway and begin a conversation about how Fluff and WastAway pellets might be your new reliable feedstock.
Our History
In 1959, Sonny Bouldin and Avery Lawson combined their expertise to begin manufacturing equipment for the nursery and horticultural industries. Headquartered in Morrison, Tennessee, a small town with an economy that relies heavily on the nursery business, Bouldin and Lawson® were able to build their equipment based on the needs of the nurserymen around them who wanted automation to help increase their productivity.
In 1984, Sonny’s son Floyd purchased the company, and by the mid 1990s had positioned Bouldin & Lawson as a leading producer of nursery equipment. The company also expanded into new markets, including equipment sold to the U.S. Government to use in recycling military ordinance and other difficult-to-handle materials. Floyd Bouldin and his team of engineers worked to produce the first super grinder, called “The Tank,” which was capable of grinding up a 3-bedroom framed house (including the block foundation and plumbing fixtures) in less than four hours.
With the support and encouragement of the U.S. Military, Bouldin & Lawson concentrated its research and development on integrating this super grinder into a garbage recycling system that was ultimately tested by the Army Corps of Engineers at the U.S. Army Base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Several tons of garbage were effectively converted into Fluff® – and WastAway® was born.
Since 2002, when WastAway was created as a subsidiary of Bouldin Corporation, the technology has been developed, refined and perfected. Battelle became interested in the technology and contributed to its growth. There have been hundreds of studies conducted on everything from the inert nature of Fluff to its ability to act as a coal substitute in a coal-powered generating plant. WastAway systems have been installed and successfully operated, and the research and development continues to improve the process.
