It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the visionary and engaged Board of Directors, members, and sponsors on these projects. I look forward to another exciting year of developing supporting tools and services for the industry With warm regards, Sonja Winkelmann Message from the President It is safe to say that it’s technically possible to build a Net-Zero Energy Home (NZEH). There are many examples of projects where dedicated design teams accomplished their goal of building a home that produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. This is not a simple task – far from it These teams should be congratulated for overcoming the challenges in creating a NZEH. However, it’s time to reframe some of our foundational questions from ‘can it be accomplished’ to ‘how quickly can we accomplish’ the goal of making affordable NZEHs standard practice, rather than the exception. Many paths can be taken to significantly improve the performance of new home construction. There’s no shortage of green home programs We will collaborate with all parties who have an interest in advancing home energy performance; however, some things won’t be compromised. For example, ‘excess’ onsite power generation isn’t a solution for poor envelope performance. We will continue using all tools available to educate, promote innovation, and provide unbiased, reliable knowledge. But we can’t do it alone If you share in these values, please join us in our journey. Sincerely, Gary Hamer Page 2 A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 1 Industry Implementation Plan In the first quarter of 2011, the development of a NZEH Industry Implementation Plan (IIP) was undertaken by the NZEH Coalition, with funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), to establish and deliver a customer focused business plan. The objective of this project was to strategically prioritize the key activities of the NZEH Coalition based on the needs of the builders and other key industry stakeholders. With direct input from industry stakeholders, prioritization will allow the Coalition to focus efforts and resources on those activities that will have the most significant impact in moving toward achieving its vision. The industry had already been engaged and provided input on the “Technology Roadmap in Sustainable Housing” (TRM) jointly developed by Industry Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), which is yet to be published. To avoid duplication, yet compliment the TRM efforts, the NZEH Coalition based the development of the 22 key activities on that work. Consultants still working on the completion of the TRM were engaged throughout the project to ensure alignment between these activities. By creating the IIP based on the existing work of the TRM, industry stakeholders will be better positioned to adopt the recommendations from the TRM. This is also of benefit to the Coalition, since the initial research has already been done and now needs to be implemented. The Coalition believes that the IIP lays out the most likely order of implementing the 22 priority activities; however, this is a living document. The Coalition will, through ongoing objective collaboration with the key partners identified, continue to re-assess the order in which these activities will ultimately be implemented, to effectively and efficiently bring NZEH advancements into practice. To assist in the prioritization process, the Industry Taskforce and Steering Committee grouped the 22 activities into five general categories. The following chart shows the overall prioritization of the 22 activities within the 5 categories over the short, medium and long term. The dialogue it facilitates with other advanced builders, forward-thinking suppliers, and government agencies like NRCan, CMHC, and DOE, has been instrumental in helping us with our drive to be industry leaders in net-zero energy housing. The webinars, the sharing of experiences, and the exposure to new products and techniques has helped us avoid costly mistakes and drill down quickly to the best, most cost effective solutions. We've been enormously impressed by the coalition's ability to leverage its limited resources to raise the bar in energy efficient housing in North America. There is no limit to my respect for the achievements of the Coalition.” Peter Amerongen, Habitat Studio & Workshop Ltd “The Coalition congratulates the winners and finalists for their vision to advance net-zero energy homes, in both Canada and the United States. Our Champion and the people behind these outstanding projects are truly Zero Heroes. These dedicated individuals demonstrate to all that net-zero energy homes are not only achievable but desirable.” Gary Hamer, President Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition Page 5 B U I L D I N G T H E F O U N D A T I O N Champion of the Year Sponsored by the NZEH Coalition Peter Amerongen from Habitat Studio & Workshop Ltd.
