A N N UA L R E P O R T 2 0 1 2 A b o u t t h e N e t - Z e r o E n e r g y H o m e C o a l i t i o n The Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition is a multi-stakeholder, not-for-profit organization federally incorporated in Canada in 2006. The Coalition is comprised of North American champions in advanced energy efficient residential construction and building products, the utility sector, research and development, and manufacturing and deployment of on-site renewable energy technologies. PURPOSE To accelerate the market development of affordable net-zero energy homes. VISION All new home construction will meet a net-zero energy standard by 2030. MISSION Operating within our core values, we will work with partners and stakeholders to move the residential building sector toward a net-zero energy target, using all available tools. VALUES Stewardship. The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. We are responsible educators founded on respect, integrity and commitment. Innovation. The introduction of something new. We bring advancements into practice. Collaboration. To work jointly with others or together. We engage all stakeholders in the creation of solutions. Objectivity. Expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations. We are a trusted and credible source of unbiased and reliable knowledge. One significant stepping stone, as identified in the 2011 Net-Zero Energy (NZE) Home Industry Implementation Plan, was the development of definitions for both NZE and NZE Ready. Another noteworthy effort in 2012 was the expansion of our webinar offerings, to disseminate information and build a stronger network. I look forward to continuing our efforts to increase the value of membership together with our visionary Board of Directors, Sponsors, and our growing community of members. 2013 promises to be another eventful year, working to accelerate the market development of affordable net-zero energy homes With warm regards, Sonja Winkelmann Message from the President Like a home taking shape once the foundation has been poured, the Coalition’s past foundational work is moving us into the next phase of construction. This past year has provided us with insight into the skills and experience that our members possess. In 2012 we hosted 14 webinars on the topics ranging from the practical lessons learned by builders and designers, to research results on the best opportunities for optimizing net-zero energy (NZE) homes. We learned that is doesn’t matter where in the world a NZE home was being built, there were some common themes: the importance of focusing on reducing loads rather than ‘solving’ issues with technology, and that a simple design is generally the most elegant solution. In 2013 we will host our first Summit that will see industry leaders collaborate on mapping the shortest ‘Path to Zero.’ We are confident that with your help we can help industry build momentum and meet the Coalition’s goal to make net-zero energy housing standard practice – in the near future. This Coalition will continue to educate, promote innovation, and provide unbiased and reliable knowledge around building better homes. If you too share in the vision that ‘one day all homes will be built this well,’ become a member, learn from others and share your knowledge as we travel together on the ‘Path to Zero.’ Sincerely, Gary Hamer Page 2 A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 2 Industry Endorsed Definitions On March 31, 2011, the Net-Zero Energy Home (NZEH) Coalition published an Industry Implementation Plan (IIP), in which it was noted that a common language was required before embarking upon any of the other efforts identified within the IIP. So the key starting point of the IIP was the development of industry endorsed net-zero energy and net-zero energy ready definitions with quantifiable performance metrics. As the only industry association in North America focused specifically on net-zero energy homes, the Coalition is uniquely positioned to lead this work. The Coalition has attracted an experienced group of individuals from diverse industries into its membership. This helps in both the operation of the organization and as a deep resource for consultation. Key industry specialists from across North America were recruited to form a Definitions Project Committee, including builders with experience in high performance homes. Individuals were selected for their knowledge in the processes and metrics of existing initiatives (such as EQuilibrium, R-2000, Super-E, Energy Star, Passivhaus, Active House, LEED for Homes, Built Green, the National Green Building Standard, etc.) with the intent to use the successful aspects and avoid the less successful aspects. Geographically diverse builders experienced in NZE home construction were chosen to ensure regional industry needs were appropriately considered. The Definitions Project Committee members engaged in comprehensive discussions, and although the quality of the discussions and input was unparalleled, arriving at a consensus on all issues was not possible during the short timeframe of this project. However, excellent progress was made and the result of this project provides important information that will support the continuation of this developmental work. The project report identifies definitions for both net-zero energy (NZE) and net-zero energy ready (NZER) homes as well as performance metrics recommendations derived from the project committee and industry survey. Additionally, the project outcomes section of the project report includes recommendations on verification methods, optimization tools, and how the deep energy retrofit industry might also be included in these efforts. The results of the market research survey questions are also included. NZER A net-zero energy ready home is one that is designed, modelled, and constructed to produce as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis but has not yet installed the onsite renewable energy generation system(s). Page 4 Webinars A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 2 In order to promote net-zero energy homes and disseminate best practices, we began to offer monthly informational and educational webinars in 2012. In 2012 the Coalition hosted 14 webinars which were attended by a total of 297 people. The webinars with the most attendees (37 each) were “Affordable Net-Zero Energy Housing - Optimization Research”, presented by Mark Carver, Natural Resources Canada, and “The Path to Net Zero Project”, presented by Anil Parekh, Senior Research Manager, Natural Resources Canada. The Coalition website contains a listing of all our past webinars. (The list for 2012 is shown on page 5.) On each webinar web page, the presenter’s slide deck and a link to the webinar recording can be found. In 2012, Coalition members enjoyed unlimited access to our live webinars as well as archived webinar recordings via Dropbox. Non-members joined our live webinars for $25.
