Largest solar plant of Canada to be built
Canadian Solar Solutions commissioned a consortium a photovoltaic solar plant of 100 megawatts (MW) for the Grand Renewable Energy Park in Ontario, the most densely populate province in Canada.
This plant is part of a major investment program of $5 billion launched by Samsung Renewable Energy and other partners to create a green energy hub combining wind and solar, with an installed capacity of 1,369 MW of renewable energy.
The first phase of this program includes the construction of a solar photovoltaic power plant of 100 MW and a 150 MW wind farm. Canadian Solar Solutions will be responsible for the design, procurement and construction of the plant.
This order, which amounts to about $ 80 million (or about 60 ME), was won by ABB. The company was awarded the design, electrical installation, commissioning and performance testing of the plant. The civil engineering and mechanical installation will, in turn, executed by the partner of ABB, the Bondfield Construction, based in Ontario.
Once fully operational in 2015, the photovoltaic power plant will produce 165,000 megawatt -hours of renewable electricity per year, enough to power 13,750 Canadian homes. It will also contribute to a better protection of the environment to an annual saving of 162,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
According to statistics from the International Energy Agency, 267 MW of PV capacities were installed in Ontario in 2012, an increase of 70 % over the previous year.
