Launch of new mako tidal turbine model
Australian-based tidal turbine developer MAKO Tidal Turbines Pty Ltd ('Company') today announced that production has commenced on a new model in its tidal turbine range, the MAKO.4.
Details
The Company has pioneered a range of tidal turbines based on its proprietary and patented design which has been designed from engineering first principles to operate efficiently in water. The predictability of tidal energy is becoming recognised as a key benefit to remote communities, particularly as battery storage capacity can be minimised when the precise timing of re-charging can be predicted years in advance.
Douglas Hunt, the Company`s Managing Director said: "The new MAK0.4 design incorporates our proven design principles into a small, light-weight package with an output of up to 16kW. "To put this in context, a single MAKO.4 in a tidal location is expected to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of up to 6 households."
The design of the MAKO.4 is being led by the Company`s in-house team and builds upon the experience gained by from persistent deployment of a full-scale MAKO tidal turbine in the Tamar River in Tasmania in conjunction with the Australian Maritime College.
Douglas Hunt concluded, "The MAKO.4 has been designed as a small, easily managed, lightweight tidal turbine which is easy to maintain and which can be deployed in arrays to produce large or small amounts of power anywhere diesel generators remain the backbone of a coastal mini-grid."
