Hydroelectric power has been one of ACCIONA Energy’s activities since the company’s early days. It was initially part of a process of modernization and valorization of small hydro plants, and later developed into the construction of new plants. We therefore have considerable experience in this technology, both in terms of evaluating the water resource and in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of plants. Following a major acquisition of hydroelectric assets from Endesa in 2009, we now own a total of 76 plants in a number of river basins in Spain, with an overall capacity of 876 MW (the consolidated figure is identical). This makes hydroelectric power our second biggest source of electricity generation after wind power.

PLANTS IN 7 SPANISH REGIONS

ACCIONA has 76 hydroelectric plants in Spain with a total capacity of 876 MW. They are all owned and operated by the company. The plants are located in seven Spanish regions: Aragon (704 MW), Navarra (76 MW), Cantabria (45 MW), Catalonia (41 MW), Castilla y León (4 MW) and La Rioja and Valencia (both with 1 MW).

PRODUCTION EQUIVALENT TO THE CONSUMPTION OF 475,000 HOMES

ACCIONA Energy generated 2,581 GWh from hydropower in 2018, representing 11.7% of the total electric power of the company in that year. This is the equivalent of covering the demand for electricity from around 655,000 Spanish homes with clean energy from hydraulic resources. Hydropower generation increased by 43% in 2018 on a year-on-year basis.
