Anaerobic Digestion Technology
Anaerobic digestion is a natural process that converts organic carbon into biomethane. Anaerobic digestion (AD) uses microorganisms to break down organic materials in the absence of oxygen.

The process produces biogas, consisting primarily of methane. Methane gas is the same hydrocarbon (CH4) as the prime constituent of natural gas. The process also produces a liquid product that contains all the plant nutrients of raw manure, but in more biologically accessible forms.
The anaerobic digestion process can be operated under three conventional temperature levels:
- at low temperature: psychrophilic, 75°F to 79°F;
- at medium temperature: mesophilic, 95° to 115°F;
- at high temperature: thermophilic, 140°F.
Technology
The Bio-Terre Systems Inc. process operates at unconventional temperatures in the psychrophilic range from 75° to 79° F. The process uses bacteria conditioned to thrive in low-temperatures to digest a variety of organic substrates, allowing for greater system stability, enhanced tolerance to high nitrogen feedstock toxicity and minimize energy balance requirements. This makes it ideal for farm use in North America’s colder climate. Over a decade of scientific research backs the technology.
Strategy
We are focused on bringing best in class solutions to organic waste streams that are produced in the agriculture and agri-food processing sectors. We strive to surround each project with the highest quality relationships, extensive industry expertise, first in class technology, and hands-on management on every RES, LLC waste-to-value project.
Through our resources and experience in design, building, and operating waste-to-value projects, we maximize the sustainable benefits from biogas and/or thermal energy production, greenhouse gas emission reduction, pathogen destruction, water and air quality enhancements as well as producing high quality soil amendments.
RES was founded to be a catalyst for change and to create a better future for the next generation. We are committed to be a productive, innovative company that will greatly enhance the existing waste management system and surrounding environment in which our projects operate. We are driven to be responsible stewards of our business and the environment and we are passionate about what we do and the measureable benefits our projects create.
Benefits
RES biogas facilities utilize a unique proprietary anaerobic digestion (AD) technology suitable on high nitrogen waste streams. Primarily developed for livestock waste and other organic feedstocks such as pre-consumer food waste and fats, oils & grease (FOG). In addition, the BTS technology has been successfully tested extensively on slaughterhouse waste, animal mortalities and waste water. These complimentary feedstocks will allow RES to pursue stand-alone projects at processing facilities, food processors, slaughterhouses, etc., with a focus on geographic proximity to agricultural projects and/or other quality feedstock. In support of these efforts, BTS was recently awarded patents for prion destruction and H2S reductions in connection with their existing technology along with, patents pending on low temperature dry digestion and feedstock with high nitrogen levels such as poultry litter and solid food waste.
Biogas – A Renewable Fuel Source
The Anaerobic Digestion process produces a biogas, consisting of methane, carbon dioxide and traces of other gases. This biogas can be used directly as fuel, in combined heat and power gas engines to create electricity to be used on site or exported to the grid; or upgraded to natural gas-quality bio-methane “Renewable Natural Gas” (RNG); or can be compressed and used for transportation fuel.
Digestate – Natural fertilizer
A nutrient-rich digestate is produced from the Anaerobic Digestion process. Both liquid and solid residue are commonly used as natural fertilizer products. The solid (fibre residue) is used as a soil amendment, the liquid digestate is used as a natural fertilizer product. Other common uses for the odorless, and pathogen free residue are livestock bedding, and building materials.
Green House Gas Emission
By capturing methane produced through anaerobic digestion, each project is reducing the amount of greenhouse gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This process can be used to create a carbon credit, or GhG offset.
