CreCharModel Site A -Biochar for Biogas Production

SHARE

CreChar is utilized in biogas plants to optimize methane production while reducing the dependency on high-cost feedstocks. It comes in 25 kg bags that can be added directly to solid feed hoppers, ensuring seamless integration into existing workflows without interrupting plant operations. Throughout the trial application, a site utilizing CreChar reported an 8% decrease in input feedstock costs and achieved consistent engine performance. Chemical analyses confirmed the smooth integration of CreChar while maintaining digestate quality, compliant with PAS 110 standards, negating any adverse effects on soil application. Additionally, CreChar contributes to environmental benefits by sequestering 57 tonnes of CO2 equivalent through soil application of the treated digestate. This product offers significant financial advantages, facilitating potential cost savings at Strathendrick, with projected annual savings of up to £225,000 through optimized dosing and ongoing support from Carbogenics.

Site A is a farm-based AD plant using predominantly farm and distillery wastes as well as some energy crop. The site has 2 tanks in series with a total volume of 7000 m3 and generates 1.1MWe via 2 CHP engines.

The owner was looking for solutions to reduce expensive feedstock input whilst maintaining energy output.

This is a well-run site with comprehensive data recording and analysis. The owner is experienced and innovative focusing not only on maximising revenues but also on the wider impact on the environment.

Our approach

We run our large-scale operations, following a proven process to maximise the outputs and collect data relevant for performance monitoring. We require minimum input from the operator at the same time offering our expert advice to add further value.

The Carbogenics team assess the sites operational and chemical data filling in any gaps where necessary.

CreChar is supplied in 25 kg digestible bags which are added to the solid feed hopper daily, resulting in no disruption to normal plant operation.

The graph shows the methane yield from the site over the course of the trial. The Green bars are the average methane yields in m3 per tonne volatile solids for each month, and the Black line is cumulative amount of CreChar in the system.

  • The operator reported 8% reduction in expensive feedstocks whilst maintaining the engines at full capacity.
  • 8% reduction in digestate disposal costs
  • Smooth performance was observed and confirmed with chemical analysis
  • PAS 110 analysis of the digestate has also shown that CreChar has no negative impact on digestate quality for application to land. 57t of Co2e were removed via CreChar sequestration in the soil through digestate.
