Model FFG - Flame Front Generators

SHARE

Flame Front Generators are a traditional method of lighting flare pilots. An FFG panel mixes plant air and fuel gas into an ignition chamber. A spark plug ignites the mixture. The `flame front` travels through a 1` pipe to flare pilot.

Every operator who has ever used a flame front generator hates them. They never light the pilot on first attempt. Water condensation in the FFG pipe will extinquish the flame front. The air/gas mixture must be perfect to initiate a flame front. And they are rarely used or maintained, so operating experience is low.

We strongly recommend the Hero HES spark ignited pilot for most applications. Pilots can be accessed with JLG (up to 120ft) or lowered with the Hero retraction systems (up to 200ft).

However, for certain applications, we recommend a flame front generator ignition system. The FFG is a good choice if the flare meets some of the following criteria:

  • Fixed spark ignited pilots with limited access and no retraction system.
  • Flare stacks taller than 200 ft.
  • Existing flare and pilots are designed for FFG ignition.
  • Offshore platforms. Corrosive and salt water environments need special materials.

For the vast majority of production field and gas plant flares, the HERO HES Pilot is the perfect choice!
