Electric energy is transported at several different voltage levels in order to minimise the loss of energy during transmission from power stations to the consumer. The ideal voltage level is selected according to the power rating and the distance to be spanned.

The electric energy is converted between two or more of these voltage levels in a transformer substation.

To date, Energiequelle has installed 11 substations with a total installed power capacity of 1,224 MVA. Of course, all of these substations are used solely to feed power from renewable sources into the power grid.
