Biogas
Infinis’ focus is on electricity generation from landfill gas (LFG) and LFG management. LFG is one of the naturally occurring products of decomposing organic matter in landfill sites. LFG comprises approximately 60% methane which is one of a number of gases contributing to global warming. Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas with a contribution to global warming which is over 20 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.

By extracting LFG from landfill sites, Infinis fulfils an important role in helping waste management companies meet their environmental compliance obligations. As Infinis uses the collected LFG to generate power, it not only abates the global warming impact of the methane emissions but also provides an efficient and secure source of power generation to local communities.
How Does It Work?
Infinis’ focus is on electricity generation from landfill gas (LFG) and LFG management. LFG is one of the naturally occurring products of decomposing organic matter in landfill sites. Methane comprises around 60% of LFG which is one of a number of gases which contribute to global warming. Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas with a contribution to global warming which is over 20 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.
- Gas extraction
Infinis extracts the gas by sinking wells into the landfill site. The gas is then drawn into the well head and flows into a network of gas collection pipes. These wells are monitored on site and by real-time reporting to track the volume and composition of the LFG collected. - Conversion into electricity
The gas plant centrally collects the LFG from a network of pipes and removes the moisture. Gas composition is monitored on an ongoing basis. The LFG is then burnt in a gas engine which drives an alternator and electricity is generated. - Feed into grid
The electricity is then fed into the electrical distribution network (National Grid). The proximity of landfill sites to populated areas enables efficient energy transfer, reducing transmission losses and easing grid capacity problems. This is why Infinis is essentially an embedded generator.
The generation of power from LFG therefore abates the global warming impact of the methane emissions as well as providing an efficient and secure source of local power generation.
Our Developments
Infinis has relied on its in-house capabilities to develop greenfield landfill gas generating plants and to increase the capacity of existing plants within its portfolio. The development process for our plants has benefited greatly from the valuable experience gained in operating a portfolio of different sites, ensuring that commissioning of new capacity and hand-over to our operations team is swift and meets their plant performance requirements.
Containerised engines can be easily redeployed to reflect a decrease or increase in gas extraction at a particular site. This is equally true for key gas plant equipment such as flaring equipment and blowers. Our in-house development team keeps the key plant hardware attuned to the particular gas production stage in the life cycle of any generating plant.
