The Renewables Obligation is the key policy mechanism by which the Government is encouraging the growth necessary to reach the UK`s renewable energy targets. The RO ensures that all licensed electricity suppliers in the UK supply a specified proportion of their electricity sales from eligible renewable sources, increasing annually to 2015/16 and remaining in place until 2037. Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) are issued to accredited generators for each MWh of generation and can be sold separately from the electricity to which they relate. This allows for open trading of certificates. SmartestEnergy is the leading independent player in the ROC trading market and offers a range of ROC-related services to players in the sector.
