The Energy-From-Waste Plant Of Melfi
In the last twenty years, the problem of waste management in Italy has been further exacerbated by the amount of waste generated by community and industrial processes.Although it represents an available, renewable source from which to recover energy and materials, most waste (more than 70%) is still sent to landfills, without exploiting its energy potential, and only a minor fraction is earmarked for energy-from-waste treatment (8%), recycling or other technical treatments (around 13.5 %).

EDF Fenice owns and operates an energy-from-waste plant at Melfi (PZ) in Basilicata; the plant, which came on stream in 2001, is authorised to treat 65,000 tons/year of industrial and urban waste with concurrent cogeneration of more than 35,000 Mw/h of electricity that are sold on the national grid.
The plant was designed and constructed using forefront technologies in order to guarantee efficient destruction of waste, maximum environmental compatibility and to minimise impact on the ecosystem.
In the design phase, particular attention was dedicated to curtailing atmospheric emissions, noise, liquid discharges and solid residues For many years, all the values returned by continuous monitoring of air quality, recorded by control units around the plant, have been transmitted in real time to the environmental observatory of the Region of Basilicata and to the ARPAB (Regional Agency for Protection of the Environment), while all company processes and methods of work are regulated according to a UNI EN ISO 14001-certified environment management system.
