In the last twenty years, the problem of waste management in Italy has been further exacerbated by the amount of waste generated by community and industrial processes.Although it represents an available, renewable source from which to recover energy and materials, most waste (more than 70%) is still sent to landfills, without exploiting its energy potential, and only a minor fraction is earmarked for energy-from-waste treatment (8%), recycling or other technical treatments (around 13.5 %).
