Overview
Genasun GV-Boost 105-350W Solar Golf Cart Boost Charge Controller with MPPT for Lithium Batteries
Reliable Restart Prevents Deadlock
When a lithium battery is over-discharged, its BMS typically will disconnect the output until a charge source is present. Many unsophisticated solar charge controllers will wait for a battery to be present to begin charging, resulting in a system that never recovers. Not so with the GVB! Our GVB controller will attempt to begin charging even if no battery is present, and is able to restart most lithium batteries, so your system will automatically recover without manual intervention or a service call.
Running circles around the Competition
You have a limited amount of space on the roof of your golf cart. Advanced electronics in the GVB controller extract more usable power from your panel than any other controller. These solar charge controllers are fully waterproof, which makes them ideal for golf carts and other applications where the controller will be exposed to moisture.
Boosting Panel Voltage Saves Money
Most solar charge controllers move power from a higher voltage panel to a lower voltage battery bank. The GVB-series controllers, in contrast, pump electricity up hill. These golf cart solar charge controllers will take almost any solar panel and boost the voltage to charge a 48V LiFePO4 battery pack. Because these controllers feature true MPPT, no configuration is necessary; the controller will automatically adapt to your panel. Larger panels are cheaper per Watt than smaller panels, so using one large panel and a boost controller results in a significantly lower system cost than smaller panels in series with a conventional charge controller, not to mention simpler wiring and installation.
Unmatched Reliability
Genasun controllers are deployed to the most remote locations on earth. They continue delivering power after years at sea, through harsh Antarctic winters, in the upper atmosphere on solar powered airplanes, and in a few off-the-map locations. Each controller we ship has passed a thorough electrical test to ensure reliability. If you need mission-critical power, this is your controller.
High-Speed MPPT: Always on Target
Not all Maximum Power Point Tracking controllers were created equally. Most use a sweep and sleep method that scans the entire voltage range every 30-60 seconds. That's okay for a clear day, with a stationary panel. But moving vehicles, and changing cloud cover requires a faster, more advanced controller. Genasun controllers adapt to changing light conditions 15 times every second. They are always on target, capturing every bit of available sunshine. Simply put, other controllers can't keep up.
Computer controlled, CC/CV battery charging
Precise computer controlled charging ensures the optimal charge cycle for your battery. GVB controllers for lithium employ industry-standard Constant-Current Constant-Voltage (CC/CV) charging for widest lithium battery compatibility. The GVB's float or CV voltage is equivalent to 3.55V per cell, which is suitable for most LiFePO4 battery packs (check with your battery manufacturer to be sure).
Features
Reliable Restart
The GVB will begin charging to restart a lithium battery that has become disconnected due to over-discharge.
LED Display
The built-in LED will quickly tell you that you've installed the controller correctly. Simple to read, it will also let you know when the battery is charging from solar power, and when the battery has reached full charge.
Built-in Fuse
The GVB controller comes with a fuse built into the power line. This will keep your cart operating safely, reduce the chance of an incorrect installation, and allow end-users to make a quick fuse replacement if needed.
Waterproof: Go ahead, hose it off.
The advanced electronics inside your controller are encased in a proprietary potting compound. After extensive testing with a variety of formulations, we developed a perfect potting compound for our GVB controllers. This extra level of protection ensures trouble-free operation in real-world golf-cart and other vehicular applications.
By Popular request: What the heck is 'Passive' or 'Nominal' MPPT?
We were confused too. There are a number of golf-cart boost controllers that are advertised as MPPT controllers . . . until you read the fine print. Some clever marketers or lazy engineers came up with the idea that you can 'passively' track the Maximum Power Point by operating at a fixed voltage. This is a joke. Tracking is the essential part of Maximum Power Point Tracking. Why? The Maximum Power Point changes. Tracking is the way you adapt to that change, and collect more power. 'Passive' turns out the mean that the controller manufacturer took a guess and picked a voltage that will provide the maximum power for one specific panel, at one specific angle, in one specific lighting condition, at one latitude, at one specific time of the year. With this type of controller, you'll be lucky to get the the maximum potential power a few times a year. The rest of the time, you'll be loosing a lot of the panel power you paid for. In our own tests in with a competitor's buck controller advertising 'Nominal MPPT', we found that the performance was often significantly worse than even a PWM controller.
