Spain’s Iberdrola Renovables and its Brazilian partner, energy company Neoenergia, have received a contract from Brazil’s Agencia Nacional de Energia Electrica (Aneel) to deliver the electric output of nine wind farms—a deal characterized as a major step in allowing the Iberdrola-Neoenergia consortium to move ahead with construction of the facilities. The nine wind farms, all in Brazil, will have a total installed capacity of 258 megawatts (MW) and are expected be operational by January 2013. The consortium has signed a contract with Spain’s Gamesa for the supply, transport, and erection of turbines for the facilities. The consortium’s contract with Aneel has an estimated value of €60 million ($77 million U.S.) per year over the next 20 years. The contract was awarded as part of a recent tender by Aneel for renewable energy; altogether, Aneel awarded contracts to 50 wind farms (1,520 MW of total capacity), five hydroelectric plants (101 MW), and one biomass-fired plant (64 MW).
