St John’s College, Oxford, will reap substantial financial and environmental benefits from sustainable low-cost technology, supplied by the company ENER-G— heat pump solutions provider.

The 500-student college – established in 1555 – is among educational institutions across the country that are taking advantage of low cost, renewable ground source energy for heating, cooling and hot water.

ENER-G’s ground source heat pump systems use advanced technology to harness solar energy absorbed by the earth and convert it into green energy.

St John’s College, located in the historic centre of Oxford, accommodates 500 graduate and undergraduate students. Alumni include the novelist Kingsley Amis, poet Philip Larkin and former prime minister, Tony Blair.

The ground source system at St John’s College became operational in August 2010. It comprises of 40 boreholes and a heat pump technology with capacities of 146kW for heating and 115kW for cooling. The system was installed under a contract with Oxfordshire-based building contractor Kingerlee Ltd.

Reducing carbon emissions is integral to St John’s College’s environmental management strategy.

Using ENER-G’s heat pump solutions is to become even more advantageous, thanks to new government plans to incentivise sustainable low carbon heating technology.

The renewable heat incentive (RHI) scheme, to be introduced in June 2011, will guarantee significant subsidy payments and dramatically reduce the payback period for all organisations that install ENER-G’s heat pump technologies.

Turnkey delivery of individual heat pump projects is delivered by ENER-G’s unique in-house resources including its own specialist designers, drilling rigs, drilling technicians, mechanical installers and project managers.

ENER-G has won official certification for its expertise in renewable heat pump technology. The Approved Contractor certificate recognises the quality of ENER-G’s design, supply, and installation of ground source heat pumps, in line with exacting technical standards set out by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
