The Solar Foundation
The Solar Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing the use of solar and solar-compatible technologies worldwide. We believe that increasing access to this clean, abundant, reliable, and affordable energy source will lift up people’s lives and bring about a prosperous future for all. Founded in 1977, The Solar Foundation was relaunched in its current form in 2010. Today, we combine decades of experience with an entrepreneurial outlook and a focus on getting things done. While we firmly believe that solar is an integral part of our energy future, The Solar Foundation has no industry affiliation. With our reputation for impartiality and rigorous analysis, we are on the front lines of the change toward a bright solar future.

Solar is the fastest growing source of renewable energy in the United States today. The Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2015 recently documented that the solar industry employs nearly 209,000 Americans, with solar employment growing at approximately 20 percent per year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. The solar industry employs three times more people than the coal industry, and is creating jobs at a rate 12 times higher than the overall economy.
More solar generating capacity was installed in the United States in 2015 than any year before. Solar accounted for nearly one-third of new electric generating capacity in 2015. The solar success story is not confined to the United States. The International Energy Agency has found that if policymakers provide an appropriate level of support, solar has the potential to become the world’s largest source of electricity by 2050. The world’s cleanest, most available energy source, solar is a win-win for the planet and the global economy.
The Solar Foundation informs solar policy decisions by delivering analysis and actionable information via high-quality reports to a diverse community of stakeholders. The Solar Foundation’s research, tools, and services promote clean energy adoption and solar-focused education opportunities. Major programs include:
