An industry first: SNC-Lavalin successfully integrates a commercial post-combustion CCUS system into a coal-fired power plant
SaskPower recently set a precedent when it fired up a commercial-grade carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) system at its Boundary Dam power plant in Saskatchewan. It’s the first time that a CCUS system of this size has ever been retrofitted into a coal-fired plant anywhere in the world. SNC-Lavalin was proud to provide complete EPC and training services for the project’s groundbreaking carbon capture system, which includes a heat-rejection system and carbon dioxide (C02) compression technology.
The CCUS system will remove up to 90 percent of the carbon dioxide from the flue gas of the Boundary Dam’s third unit. A second amine-based process will remove all sulfur dioxide (SO2) from its flue stream. The captured CO2 will be injected underground to enhance oil recovery at the local Weyburn oil field, and the SO2 will be converted into commercial-grade sulfuric acid.
Sustainability through innovation
SNC-Lavalin teams are currently at work on the Vale Clean Atmospheric Emissions Reduction (AER) project in Ontario, and a modernization and upgrade of copper smelter and sulphuric acid complex in Bor, Serbia. Like Boundary Dam, Vale AER and RTB Bor will take big bites out of harmful emissions in their respective countries.
Projects like these demonstrate that it’s possible to vastly improve the environmental performance of aging industrial facilities. All it takes are governments with a commitment to a clean future, clients with the will to act, and engineering and construction companies with the right expertise.
“SNC-Lavalin is actively working with governmental entities, research councils, international organizations, agencies and private companies to develop and implement innovative solutions to air quality and climate change challenges,” said Terrance N. Ivers, Executive Vice-President, Oil & Gas, SNC-Lavalin. “We are proud to have an opportunity to help enhance the synergies between these key partners, and create new opportunities to develop projects and initiatives that will reduce harmful emissions worldwide.”
