Burns & McDonnell Wins First-Ever Dual Grand Conceptor Prizes From Missouri Chapter of American Council of Engineering Companies
Iatan Generation Station Unit 2 and ZeaChem Cellulosic Ethanol Demonstration Project Each Recognized as Top Projects in Missouri for 2012
KANSAS CITY, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/12 -- Burns & McDonnell has received Grand Conceptor awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies' (ACEC) Missouri Chapter for the Iatan 2 power station, completed for KCP&L and a cellulosic ethanol demonstration project constructed for ZeaChem Inc. in Boardman, Ore. It is the first time the ACEC Missouri Chapter has awarded dual Grand Conceptor Awards in its annual engineering competition. The Grand Conceptor is the highest recognition given by the ACEC for engineering excellence.
KCP&L's Iatan Generation Station Unit 2 is widely recognized throughout the power industry as one of the cleanest and most efficient supercritical coal-fired power facilities in North America and is an important model for the next generation of solid-fuel generating plants. Burns & McDonnell served as Engineer of Record for KCP&L during all phases of construction of Iatan 2 as well as a retrofit of air quality control systems at the adjacent Iatan 1 power station. Burns & McDonnell began providing engineering design services in September 2004 and remained dedicated to the project until Iatan underwent full dispatch to the Southwest Power Pool on Dec. 31, 2010. As principal engineering consultant for the $2 billion project, Burns & McDonnell provided permitting and feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed design, balance of plant design, procurement services, construction management and startup management.
ZeaChem Inc., a developer of biorefineries for the conversion of biomass into sustainable fuels and chemicals, hired Burns & McDonnell in 2010 to provide engineering design, procurement and construction management services for its new facility in Boardman, Ore. The demonstration scale biorefinery has capacity of 250,000 gallons per year, using a patented process that produces advanced ethanol, fuels and chemicals from a variety of non-food cellulosic feedstocks. While ZeaChem's technology is feedstock agnostic, the Boardman facility utilizes fast-growing poplar trees harvested from a nearby tree farm and locally sourced wheat straw. The core project enabling the conversion of sugars into the intermediate chemicals acetic acid and ethyl acetate has begun operations and cellulosic ethanol production will begin by the end of 2012. The Boardman plant will serve as a model for commercial scale biorefineries designed to produce a variety of economical and sustainable fuels and chemicals.
