CBA Calls for Policies to Create Sustainable Biogas and RNG Business Models Across Canada
Ottawa, Ontario (August 25, 2017) - As the voice of Canada's biogas sector, the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) calls upon the federal and provincial governments to create policies that sup port the development of biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) projects across the country.
The Government of Canada is committed to achieving a low-carbon economy and biogas is a proven, 100% renewable technology that can continue to play a role in helping Canada achieve its vision today. Biogas is the only renewable energy technology that captures and destroys methane, a potent shortlived climate pollutant, from organic waste. Methane has a strong climate effect with a global warmi ng potential 86 times greater than carbon dioxide over 20 years. Reducing methane emissions today can make an immediate beneficial impacton climate change.
Canada has the opportunitytobea leaderin sustainable practices through the production of biogas. To achieve this, the industry needs predictable market demand and long-term revenue to attract capital i nvestment necessary to develop new biogas projects.
Jennifer Green, Executive Director of the Canadian Biogas Association notes that 'Biogas systems address many of the energy, environmental, and rural economic priorities in our Canadian provinces. Market demand and revenues are essential to spur development and realize these benefits.'
