The Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programmes aim is to develop initiatives across Scotland that reduce Greenhouse emissions and maximise the potential economic benefits of the sector.
Scotland’s decarbonisation program is already held as a leading example of good practice in Europe and with an ambition for the countries power supply to be 100% green by 2020 – the electrification of heating systems will make a strong contribution to the agenda.
The Clyde Gateway Project
Clyde Gateway is Scotland’s biggest regeneration programme tasked to lead the way on achieving unparalleled social, economic and physical change across our communities covering an 840-hectare area of Glasgow and Rutherglen. With LCITP support SHARC energy systems will be installed to the Clyde at two key Clyde Gateway sites, Dalmarnock and Shawfield in Glasgow. This development demonstrates the use of SHARC technology on a scaled basis to deliver District Heat Network solutions.
The Sites – Magenta at Clyde Gateway
Magenta, on Shawfield road, is currently under development, providing 1.2 million sq. ft. of commercial space. This development is about creating a progressive community, that is greener and more spacious than any city centre location.
The SHARC Energy solution is a Unique selling point for the Development and will provide several key benefits to the potential occupiers of the site
The energy centre at Magenta park will be part of the central hub for SHARC Scotland, manned by staff who monitor and maintain all the SHARC units required to service a site of this size.
The Sites – Dalmarnock at Clyde Gateway
Dalmarnock is a unique and innovative development in the form of a Hybrid industrial park that blends office and industrial development on the same site.
Once fully developed the two systems at Magenta and Dalmarnock will save up to 2,800 tonnes of Carbon Emissions each year, when compared to the equivalent gas heating supply, which will improve as the grid decarbonises.
In addition to supplying energy to the sites, SHARC Energy systems will be making Clyde Gateway their European Head Quarters to house our production and operations activity.
Financing the service:
The enabling works and infrastructure is financed through our Design, Build, Finance and Operate service enabling us to provide the upfront infrastructure for a known heat capacity.
Using Special Project Vehicles supported by a tested contract structure, the funds to facilitate the project development can be attracted to support early stage development.
This model is particularly beneficial for new build operations like the Clyde gateway and enables the deployment of renewable technology without initial CAPEX outlay to the developer, ensuring future tenants are able to benefit from cost savings at the point of entry.
The heat supply cost is capped against the market throughout the life of the agreement so tenants at the sites can account for fuel price certainty and are protected against a fluctuating fossil fuel market. Servicing and maintenance costs of the system are also included in the agreement undertaken by local engineers employed and managed by SHARC to provide all the site servicing.
