Copenhagen’s Steeper Energy Aps awarded 17,280,000 DKK grant from the Danish Department of Energy (EUDP)
Copenhagen Denmark – November 1, 2013 – Steeper Energy Aps, a Danish-Canadian clean-fuel company, has been awarded a DKK 17.3 million grant from the Danish Department of Energy (EUDP). The grant provides support to Steeper Energy from January 2014 to December 2017 in support of the commercialization of Hydrofaction™. The Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP) is a public grant scheme. The scheme supports new technology in the energy field, which can help meet Denmark’s energy and climate goals.
The main objective of the proposed project is to pave the way for the world’s first commercial bio-refinery for production of low-sulphur bio-marine diesel propulsion fuel based on Steeper Energy’s Hydrofaction™ technology platform.
The project relies on the continued operation and modification/extension of the Continuous Bench Scale (“CBS”) plant located on the campus of Aalborg University. The CBS plant will be utilized for testing and demonstrating advances in processing and new system prototypes, as well as continued testing of individual and combinations of biomass feedstocks for a period of three years. The new systems and prototypes currently envisioned will target specific new technical concepts developed as well as critical items for the performance of a 1000 barrel per day (BPD) plant.
Examples of prototypes to be demonstrated include proprietary pump design, heat recovery between incoming and outgoing streams, new advanced reactor design, recovery of liquid CO2 from gas product as well as separation and upgrading. These concepts are cost effectively and best demonstrated at the flexible CBS unit. It is important to note that the prototype to be developed and tested in this phase will be a scaled-down version to be integrated into the future 1000 BPD plant rather than a scaled-up design based on the current ½ BPD capacity of the CBS unit.
