Hot microbes at Skövde Biogas

In February this year the first feedstock was supplied to a new biogas plant in Skövde, Sweden. Since then biogas production has come underway proper and earlier this week a group of international visitors from China, Russia and Australia took a firsthand view on a trip organized as part of World Bioenergy.
With a capacity of 3.8 MW or around 40 GWh per year, the new biogas plant in Skövde is currently one of the five largest in Sweden. The feedstock used is mainly slaughterhouse waste from Skövde Slakteri along with other food industry waste from Arla Foods in Skövde. The plant is also equipped to handle packaged foods that have been rejected from supermarkets or industry.
The plant uses a unique thermophile process whereby the substrate digestion and conversion to raw biogas takes place at 52oC. This raw gas is then upgraded to vehicle grade biogas and used to fuel cars and busses with the main client being AGA in Stockholm.
The company Skövde Biogas is jointly owned by energy utility Göteborg Energi and the municipality of Skövde. The investment was around 135 million SEK of which 23 million was provided via the Climate Investment Programme (KLIMP). The equipment was supplied by the German biogas technology supplier Farmatic.
