Thailand’s Energy Ministry vows for green power technology
Green technology is important to the success in dealing with challenges faced by Thailand and other ASEAN countries in securing energy security and sustainability and that the event like SETA 2016 will help these countries access to the required technology, Dr Areepong Bhoocha-oom, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, told the audience of the keynote session at SETA 2016.
Demand for energy is growing in Thailand and the country is trying to secure enough power and electricity. By doing so, the country is pursuing diversification to reduce reliance on gas for its electricity generation and coal and renewable energy will be used to partially replace gas.
Although coal is still a problem in Thailand due to public concerns on environment impact, Dr. Areepong said Thailand and other ASEAN countries still have to lean on coal as they are developing countries with low income, but they can do it in greener way.
“We still need the coal fired plant but we can have it at a limited way and use the clean coal technology to reduce the environmental impact while improve the operating efficiency. Meanwhile, we continue to enhance understanding of the clean coal fired power operation among the public,” Mr Areepong said.
Apart from having coal fired plant to help boost the energy security on the country, Thailand also has a policy to boost renewable energy as an alternative fuel for electricity generation. At present, Thailand can produce 2,000 MW from solar energy and 2000 MW from biomass fuel and has a target to escalate the amount in the future.
In addition, in a bid to secure the required electricity and reduce the reliance on gas, Thailand also purchase electricity from Laos and has an exchange program with Malaysia, Mr Areepong said. He added that Thailand also has a plan to buy electricity from Myanmar and Cambodia.
