dProtection - Relay Protection System
dLaboratory's relay protection system dProtection is a modern centralized computer system for relay protection functionality, registration of incidents and incident analysis. The system is based on hardware from Beckhoff Automation AB. The computers and related components are designed for industrial environments, has long lifecycle and high endurance and fulfills EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4 among other standards. All components in dProtection are tested and proven in several industrial and power engineering environments, for example robotics and wind power control.

Product Details
The relay protection system consists of two computers with associated bus components and I/O terminals. The computers has all software on memory cards and lacks almost completely moving parts (e.g. hard drives), with the exception of a CPU fan. The system builds an information network to which groups of I/O terminals are connected. Between the bus components and the computers Ethernet cabling is used and in the information network between the terminal groups plastic fiber cables are used.
The system construction is flexible and scalable and is customized for each station. All components are replaceable with equivalent components without extra configuration. This includes the computers as well, as all the information is saved on memory cards.
The bus components are used to create a redundant information network based on EtherCAT technology, which has real-time performance and high reliability. Data can be sent two different ways and is protected by an error detection and error handling protocol. The topology of the information network can be customized based on the station.
A terminal group consists of I/O terminals. The I/O terminals are available as input and output terminals and in different versions depending on signal level and signal type. The terminal composition is customized based in the need of protection functionality, incident recording and monitoring of general signals, like alarm signals from other units.
Protections for outgoing line feeders
The relay protection is developed for the basic need of protections for outgoing line feeders.
Incident recordning and analysis
Incident recordning and analysis
Incidents can be recorded independently of the protection functionality with dLaboratory's incident recorder dBox. It can be setup to record incidents that does not trip the relay protections and thereby provide an indication when something may be about to happen. The recorder gathers all the available data in the station at the moment of an incident, so a complete picture of the incident can be sent to dLaboratory's cloud service for analysis. The patented automatic analysis is executed in the cloud service dAnalysis and is presented both through a web interface and through a compact report. It is also the possible to retrieve data through a SCADA system.
User interface
Inspiration from modern products have resulted in a powerful and user friendly graphical interface. The software includes all functionality for hardware configuration, configuration of relay protections and configuration of incident recording. It also has system surveillance and relay protection status, which shows both active incidents and past incidents. Measurement data and active configuration is easily obtained.
The configuration of the relay protection functionality has a modern design with clear names and a structured layout. This results in fast configuration and parameterization of one or more relay protections.
The interface can be displayed on a touch screen on the front of the control cabinet where operation and maintenance maneuvers can be performed. A computed can easily be connected with TCP/IP and can display the same graphical interface through a web browser, with no need for any other software.
System overview and communication
dProtection can be integrated in a station with all communication to SCADA over IEC 60870-5-104 or with IEC 61850 through a RTU for horizontal communication internally in the station.
The main part of the system is placed in the control cabinet and is connected with a fiber network to the terminal groups located by the respective switchgears. Breaker operations are performed with a quick and strong combination of power relays. Indications measurement signals and maneuver signals are connected to an I/O terminal with technical attributes fitting the purpose.
Areas of use
dProtection is a complete system for relay protection functionality and incident analysis. The construction enables a flexible installation in cases where conventional protection can be to extensive and costly.
One or several levels of protection functionality should exist in a station, depending on the stations properties and purpose. All components e.g. common and backup protection devices and tap changer can be connected to a RTU that has a user interface and communicate with the SCADA system.
dProtection can constitute as one level of relay protection with the other components and has the necessary protection algorithms for outgoing line feeders in a station. Incoming feeders can be protected by dProtection as well if for example the station is a junction station without transformer.
